Chinese or Western Acupuncture, what’s the difference?
Acupuncture has been widely practiced in China and other countries for centuries. It is a well tried and tested therapy that involves the insertion of fine needles into the body. In Chinese practice acupuncture is often used together with other therapies such as herbal medicine, together these and more therapies form what is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Western or Medical Acupuncture takes this ancient practice and integrates it with modern western medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
Scientific research shows acupuncture works. Many healthcare professionals now find it helpful in the management of pain, headaches, anxiety and depression and numerous other conditions.
In the West we use the term Medical Acupuncture to signify the integration of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture with current knowledge of normal and abnormal body function, allowing us to successfully treat people, often where orthodox western approaches have not worked.
