- Are Dr Hauschka Products Good
Perhaps a good place to start when addressing this question is to look at what vegan means in the context of skincare and cosmetic products.
A vegan diet is relatively easy to understand. Vegans will not consume food made from animals or animal by-products such as cheese or milk.
This means vegans consume foods in their diet that are 100% plant based.
This general rule of exempting animal products and by-products is quite simply applied to skincare and cosmetic products. This means certain products are ruled out for their use which you might find quite surprising.
Some examples of commonly used animal by-products in skincare are things like beeswax, honey and propolis wax. Silk powder, lanolin (an excellent moisturiser), carmine (a colourant derived from beetles) and milk sugar.
It is worth noting that vegan and cruelty free are not interchangeable terms and it is also perfectly possible to have an animal product that is not created with cruel methods. A simple example is lanolin which is created when sheep’s wool is washed. This does not hurt the sheep and is actually quite important so that their coat can be sheared to ensure it does not get too heavy. However, vegan products will avoid such a substance.
The products made by Dr Hauschka contain ingredients that are mainly of vegetable origin such as Dr. Hauschka Rose Bath Essence but there are some products which contain ingredients that are sourced from the animal kingdom.
Therefore it is important to read the label and packaging which will be quite clear if the product you are looking at is vegan.
Because of Dr Hauschka’s approach to ethics they always consider the importance of each ingredient in a product before using it. A useful example is that on occasion they will use beeswax because it can be really valuable in a natural skincare product. However, it is an animal by-product. Dr Hauschka takes the viewpoint that they will look at all the kingdom’s of nature for the most effective ingredients and the animal kingdom is just as important as the plant kingdom.
If they do take something from nature they always do so with the view that it should be done in a sustainable way that maintains a healthy environment and with the highest quality of product in mind too.

Why is there Titanium dioxide (CI 77891)in this product?? I've been using it for a decade thinking it was "safe." But a simple web search found this: "Titanium dioxide (CI 77891) is generally considered safe to use in cosmetics when applied to the skin, but it can be dangerous if inhaled. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has designated titanium dioxide as a carcinogen, and animal studies have shown an increased risk of lung cancer when inhaled." So not only are some of their products not vegan, they are also debatably safe/unsafe.
